A year on the road – Un an sur la route…

It’s our anniversary! One year ago today we left from Bordeaux airport, moving to New Zealand via North, Central and South America. First leg of the journey: Canada – via Iceland – as usual, taking the scenic route. J

One year and 15 countries later, we took some time (since we have a fair stack of it!) to ask the kids and ourselves about the good and the bad of living out of a camper and here are their thoughts:

Olivia loves:

Collecting and eating coconuts on the beach in Mexico
Pre-dinner drinks – or snacks in her case!
Driving
Getting to wear her favourite dress nearly every day!
Playing in the sand – at the beach, at the river, in the desert, or even in a parking lot- she can find sand everywhere!

Olivia loves less :

Falling over when she is on a walk
The mosquitoes

Max loves:

Driving
Reading
“I like being in Picar because sometimes it rains and we are nice and dry and warm.”

Max loves less :

Not having much space in the campervan

Border crossings as it always takes too long
Doing school because afterwards I don’t have enough time to play! (Ed: An hour of school a day is really such a big ask !!)

Zoé loves:

Having a big bed
Driving (but only when I get the seat next to the window)
Getting to spend lots of time reading (especially my Harry Potter books)

Zoé loves less:

That my bed is in the middle of the campervan and everyone comes to sit on it or put their stuff on it
Not understanding when people talk Portuguese

Pippa loves:

Having my family with me, having time to really get to know my children and to see them grow up
The amazing countryside we have been through
Meeting people we would never have met in our ‘normal’ lives
Practising my Spanish
Happiness in simple things – like a hot shower or having clean sheets
Living outside close to Nature

Pippa loves less:

Having my family with me – ALL OF THE TIME
The constant fight against dirt, dust and sand – living outside in hot third world countries can get really dirty!
Always have to search for laundries
That there is never any loo paper in the toilets – not to mention the bins over flowing with used paper….
The daily fight when we say the word “School”!
Never having clean sheets
Living outside close to neighbours, dogs, roosters and general passers-by

Florent loves:

Not having to work, not having any set times and never having to set the alarm!
Long drives
Hanging out with the kids when I feel like it
The freedom (at least to think) that we can go anywhere we want, when we want
Having few possessions – everything we need is with us in the car
Meeting other travellers and sharing stories (and a few beers)
Collecting and eating coconuts on the beach
Lying in my hammock under the coconut trees reading
Eating in side of the road stalls when you are not exactly sure what is on your plate!

Florent loves less:

Emptying the camper toilets every 3-4 days!
Knowing that there is an end date to this trip
Hanging out with the kids when I don’t feel like it!

Un an sur la route

C’est notre anniversaire! Il y a un an on est parti de Bordeaux Mérignac, déménagement en Nouvelle Zélande en passant par l’Amérique du Nord, Centrale et du Sud. Première étape du voyage: Canada – en passant par l’Islande – la route touristique! J

Un an plus et 15 pays plus tard, nous avons pris le temps (on n’a que ça!) de demander aux enfants (et de se demander) les bons et les moins bons côtés de la vie dans un camper. Voici leurs idées:

Olivia aime:

Manger les noix de cocos sur la plage en Mexique
Les apéros !
Rouler
Porter sa belle robe tous les jours
Jouer dans le sable partout – sur la plage, à la rivière, dans le désert ou même dans un parking!

Olivia aime moins:

Les moustiques
Tomber quand on se ballade

Max aime:

J’aime quand on roule
J’aime lire
J’aime bien être dans Picar parce que des fois il pleut et on est tout chaud

Max aime moins:

Je n’aime pas quand on n’a pas d’espace dans le camping-car
Je n’aime pas qu’Olivia m’embête
Je n’aime pas les frontières parce que ça prend trop longtemps
Je n’aime pas faire l’école parce qu’après je n’ai pas le temps de jouer (NDLR : avec une heure d’école par jour, c’est vraiment trop dur!!!)

Zoé aime:

Avoir un grand lit
Rouler (quand j’ai la place à la fenêtre)
Passer beaucoup de temps à lire des livres (surtout la série d’Harry Potter)

Zoé aime moins:

Que mon lit soit au milieu du camping-car et que tout le monde s’assoit dessus et y pose leurs affaires
Ne pas comprendre quand les gens parlent portugais

Pippa aime:

Avoir toute ma famille avec moi
Avoir le temps de connaitre réellement mes enfants et de les voir grandir
Les paysages époustouflants que nous avons traversés
Rencontrer des personnes de différents pays, différentes origines, que nous n’aurions jamais rencontrés dans nos vies « normales »
Perfectionner notre l’espagnol
Le Bonheur ressenti pour des choses simples comme une bonne douche et des draps propres
Vivre dehors auprès de la nature

Pippa aime moins:

Avoir toute ma famille avec moi – toujours
Etre constamment en train de lutter contre la poussière, le sable, la terre – vivre dehors dans des pays sous-développés avec trois enfants salit beaucoup!!
Etre toujours à la recherche des laveries
Qu’il n’y a jamais de papier toilette dans les toilettes publiques…
La lutte quotidienne pour faire l’école!
Ne jamais avoir des draps propres
Vivre dehors auprès du voisinage, des chiens, des coqs…

Florent aime:

Ne pas avoir de boulot, ne pas avoir d’heure et de ne pas se réveiller avec un réveil!
Rouler pendant des heures
Avoir le minimum de possessions. Tout ce dont on a besoin est avec nous
Profiter des enfants quand j’en ai envie
Les rencontres-apéros avec d’autres voyageurs
Ramasser et casser des noix de coco pour les manger
Lire sous les cocotiers dans mon hamac
Manger dans des “bouisbouis” sans vraiment savoir ce qu’il y a dans ton assiette

Florent aime moins:

Vider la cassette des toilettes tous les 3-4 jours!
“Profiter” des enfants quand je n’en ai pas envie
Savoir qu’il y a une date de fin à ce voyage !
La liberté, (au moins de penser), que l’on peut aller là où on veut, quand on veut
