We didn't tell you everything !

Here’s an article we wrote a couple of days ago in the heat of the moment so to speak. We are now up in the mountains where it’s much cooler and there are no mosquitos so the worst of it is over, but we’d thought you might enjoy all the same.

So on this blog we tell you about all the good stuff, the pictures and stories of the best parts of our trip. But there are also other parts we didn't mention ... :) We still live with three children in a very small space as we travel through a developing country... So here are the producer's notes, a few details from the other side of the story:

  1. It’s hot here. As in anything from 30 to 39 degrees... Florent and Max have heat rash all over their bodies (allergie au soleil), and sometimes Pippa and Florent have to have separate bedrooms, as in get up in the middle of the night to make the table into a double bed so we can sweat it out apart!

  2. Trying to persuade the kids that learning the future tense of verbs of the second group, or to learn multiplication tables while the poor things are dripping with perspiration and other kids are playing on the beach only metres away brings many challenging family moments!

  3. Despite the incredible heat, Florent and Pippa have managed to pick up a cold and fever. Add chili sauce to the mix and our noses are running like the leaky taps in the RV park!

  4. The mosquitos. Ferocious and tiny, they find their way in as we open the windows (for the reasons described in the first paragraph), and they are mean biters! Pippa and Max are the worst to suffer, or the tastiest, and with the heat rash and bites, Max's legs are a mess!

  5. Mexicans love for music, loud music! If we do manage to get to sleep, despite the heat, despite the mosquitos and the itchiness of bites and rashes, it’s very likely we will be woken soon by someone somewhere enjoying some loud tunes on their boom box! We love the music during the day, at the beach and in the town squares, but the 2am backyards disco are getting tiresome.

  6. Quick Update before posting: Florent didn’t actually get a Heat Rash (1st paragraph) nor a random Cold (3rd paragraph) but the famous Zika from the only mosquito that bit him! His recent painful and swollen joints confirmed that.

So there you go- it’s not all Pina coladas and palm trees... Well there is a lot of that, but sometimes we're feeling too hot, itchy and sorry for ourselves to enjoy it fully. But then we go out for a taco and a cool corona costing about 10 euros for the whole family and it all gets better! :)
